How to Eliminate the Perceived Handicaps of your Disability

If you do require workplace accommodations, find out if you are eligible for any workplace accommodation upgrading programs.  The employer will be relieved to learn that it will not be very expensive for him or her to accommodate you.  This will make him more likely to consider you for the position.

Depending on the nature of your disability and how confident you feel about it, you can turn the disclosure process into a positive experience.  If you plan on disclosing, it may be helpful to brainstorm some of the benefits or special skills that you have developed as a result of your disability.  Remember, your "dis"-ability might be turned into "ability" in the right circumstances.  People with learning disabilities, for example are often very organized. This is an advantage in an office setting.  People who are deaf or hearing impaired can often concentrate at a higher level than hearing people because they are not as easily distracted by sounds or loud noises.  And people with ADHD tend to be very good at multi-tasking.

What are some of the benefits of your disability?  How might you be able to turn it into "ability" if it is related to the position for which you are applying?

Potential employers will be impressed by your self-confidence, ingenuity and positive attitude.
