Frequently asked questions
Do I qualify?
If you are medically releasing for any reason or are a modern-day Veteran with a physical or mental health problem caused by your service, you may be eligible for rehabilitation services from Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC).
For more information, please contact Veterans Affairs Canada.
How do I access CanVet Vocational Rehabilitation Services?
Once you qualify, your VAC case manager can refer you to CanVet Vocational Rehabilitation Services when you are ready. He or she can also help you access other New Veterans Charter (NVC) programs such as financial benefits, health care, disability awards and job placement. Talk to your VAC case manager about how VAC can best help you and your family.
What can I expect?
A range of services are provided by CanVet Vocational Rehabilitation Services, on behalf of VAC, to assist you with reaching your vocational goals. These include:
Assessment
We will collect and analyze information regarding your potential to return to work within your chosen community. Our vocational rehabilitation specialist will discuss with you your work history, existing work skill sets, your ability to learn new skills and your aptitudes and interests. You may be asked to participate in specialized assessments to help explore your employment options. The CanVet staff will also help you to find job opportunities which are available within your local community (the local labour market).
Individual Vocational Rehabilitation Plan
Based on an evaluation of the information gathered in the Assessment phase, you will work with your vocational rehabilitation specialist to choose a job goal. A written plan will detail the steps you need to take to successfully secure work in your chosen field. This may include educational upgrading, college programs, work trials and obtaining interview and job search skills. This written plan will be formalized and confirmed by you, your CanVet Vocational Rehabilitation specialist, and your VAC Case Manager.
Intervention – Getting job ready!
You will obtain the skills, abilities and work habits that will prepare you to secure a job in your chosen area of work. CanVet staff will be working on your behalf to monitor and assist you with finding work once your job preparation has been completed. When you are successful at securing a job, the CanVet staff will work with you and your employer to ensure a successful employment relationship.
